The reason for decorating falls into 3 main categories which are: The protection of the substrate is beneficial not only in sustainability terms by using less materials in repairs, carbon release and particle (dust) pollution, but the overall disruption caused by any remedial works. On a domestic level this can be accommodated quite easily, but on a commercial level can cause mass disruption to the day-to-day running of a business. The results of which can be a great loss of operational running time, resulting in a lower profit margin. Health and hygiene are supported by surfaces that have been adequately treated to enable them to be cleaned to remove dirt and bacteria. Being particularly important in areas of food storage and preparation, and for areas to enable personal hygiene to be practised without contracting or passing on unwanted ailments of varying proportions. This can be seen to it's full benefit when applied to people occupying at very close quarters, as in a hospital. With the use of eco-friendly coatings this enhances the buildings overall health implications, by reducing the level of Sick Building Syndrome and improving the environmental quality of the said area. In general we see decorating as just changing 'colour' to a room, whilst true, it only covers a small amount of the overall Aaesthetics . The choice of colour is important as this induces mood (calm), feeling (cold/warm) and energy (relaxed/invigorating) and has to be assigned accordingly. For example, it would not be wise to apply a bright energetic colour to a bedroom, when you are trying to induce a relaxed/calm mood to enhance sleep. The source of all colour is light, without light colour does not exist. The purest form of light originates from the sun as white light. The only two true colours are white (total light) and black (no light), every other colour lies between as different lengths of light rays. When light strikes a surface, waves of certain lengths are absorbed and others reflected. It is the reflected waves which are picked up by our eyes and registered by the brain as colour. See Quantity and Quality of lighting for general principles on the use of lighting in a room. |
